Exercise is good for the soul.

Didn't get to do a morning workout today because I had to be into work at 6am. Since we were sampling for pharmaceuticals, I wasn't allowed to drink caffiene until we were done sampling. Therefore, I was exhausted ALL damn day and finally had caffiene at 2pm. When I finally got home from work, I was feeling a bit cranky and slightly depressed. This is most likely due to the fact that I didn't get very much sleep the night before and it wasn't very good sleep either since I was tossing and turning all night. After packing up some of my stuff (I'm moving out of Southie to Cambridge at the end of August), I eventually ate dinner and then biked for 35 minutes around Southie until I ran out of daylight. During the ride, I tackled some pretty big hills, but it was kind of annoying to have to slow down or stop at each intersection. After my ride, I dropped my bike off home and went on a 45 minute run. I think I'm falling in love with running. I didn't really want to stop once I hit the 30 minute point. The only reason I stopped is because my left knee was starting to get a little sore and I decided to stop so I could ice it before I went to bed. After I was done with my run, I felt great! I wasn't tired and I didn't feel depressed at all! :)

This morning I went down to the South Boston Yoga Studio for an hour long group class before work. I've been in need of a good full body stretch and I definitely got it! Some of the positions were a little uncomfortable on my knees at first until my body warmed up a bit. I feel great today, and can't wait to go for a swim in the pool this afternoon! I'm going to be doing a lot more yoga in the future because I love the effects it has on my body and mind (and soul)!

My wetsuit arrived yesterday, so I'm hoping to get in an open water session this weekend!

and I'm back!

Holy moly it's been a while since my last post! So much has changed in my life since then and I've been trying to train when I can! Currently, my life is absolutely AMAZING, but it didn't come without a cost. I made the extremely difficult decision to give away my favorite thing in the entire world -- my dog Jack. It makes me teary eyed whenever I think about him, or see his pictures but I gave to him away to a great home. He's loving life with his new family and making others just as happy (if not happier) than he made me.

At the end of June, I started my big-girl job working 3 days a week in addition to my on-going research with UMASS. I found that I was home less and less, and therefore my dogs were getting less and less exercise and attention. So Jack has been adopted, and Otis is still being fostered by an amazing family in Salem, MA. Other than training for this triathlon, having 2 jobs and being dog-less, I've also rather unexpectedly acquired an absolutely amazing boyfriend. My last post was actually a couple of hours before our first unofficial date . I have not stopped training because of my recent acquisition, but the time that I had spent on blogging was replaced with spending time with him. The short story is this: when I thought my life couldn't get any better, it did.

Ok so how about my training?! I had a slight mishap involving me on a bike and a car. I was in Methuen, riding with my new favorite training partner and riding in the shoulder, and the car made a left hand turn right in front of me. I wasn't going very fast, but I still ran into the car and fell. Other than a banged up and bruised knee, I was fine and my bike is still currently still rideable. The driver and passenger of the car basically got out to make sure that I was still alive, and then took off. Awesome.

I am getting REALLY nervous about this race which is ONLY 32 days away! This past weekend, I competed in a time trial Sprint Triathlon (1/2 mile swim, 12.7 mile bike, 4.4 mile run) and finished in just under 2 hours. It was not my best performance since there were many things that went wrong, but it was definitely GREAT practice and a way to get the kinks out before the big race. I think my biggest pitfall was that I played in a doubles volleyball tournament with my pal Zack the day before. I knew the race wasn't going to be a breeze for me and figured I would finish no matter what condition I was in, but I just wanted to get some open water and transition practice in. I may not have done well in the race, but we still won the open level tourney!

Here are the pros and cons of the race:
Pre-Race
- Ate bowl of oatmeal and drank a protein shake and 1/2 of an Iced Coffee on the way
- Had to pay for a one-day USAT membership card because mine had expired
+ Arrived early, set up transition area in a jiffy, and didn't forget anything!
- Got in the water to warm up, and wished I had a wetsuit. Water temp was 77 degrees, but since it was only 7am, the air temp was around 60-65 degrees and I was FREEZING while standing there waiting for my wave to start.
The Swim
- Started at the front of the pack, got trampled on by all the stronger swimmers and choked on some water. Next time, I'm starting in the middle so it's not as hectic for me.
- It took me a while to convince myself to calm down, and I felt like I couldn't get a full breath of air. I finally relaxed after I rounded the first buoy (there were 3 total). I don't know if it's because my lungs were constricted from the cold water, or because I started the swim too strong, but I couldn't hold my breath for more than 2 strokes. In the pool, I can easily breathe every 3, sometimes 4, strokes but that was not happening. I settled into this rhythm, and kept looking up to see where I was going to make sure I wasn't completely off course.
-My goggles fogged up, so it was hard to see where I was going.
Transition 1
+ Without a wetsuit, this went pretty quickly.
- I spent a minute or so wiping the sand off my feet, so next time I will bring a dishpan and fill it with water so I can rinse off before putting bike shoes on. I didn't have my bike shoes for this particular race though, so I had to make sure all the sand was off before putting my shoes and socks on.
+ I grabbed a package of Clif Shot Blocks, threw them in the back of my jersey and put on my helmet.
- Forgot to bring my chapstick.
The Bike
- Burning quads for the first 2-3 miles.
+ Drank accelorade after mile 1
- At around mile 5, I was following a group of people who didn't turn where they were supposed to. By the time we realized it, we were a mile or so off course and turned back. I ended up biking 14.8 miles instead of 12.7 like the rest of the racers (ugh.)
- I was told that the course was "fast and flat". That was a lie. There were sooooo many rolling hills, and therefore, my legs were burning for the entire 14.8 miles.
- This was my longest bike ride of the year thus far. I'm a slacker, i know. But I definitely felt the effects of not training for this ride!
- I finally dismounted my bike and headed into T2.
Transition 2
- Had trouble putting one foot in front of the other when I got off the bike. My thoughts: "&^%$%!!! I can't hardly walk. I probably look like I'm hammered right now. How the @*&$# am supposed to run?? It's okay, my legs will loosen up and stop burning when I jog it out a little."
+ Didn't spend very long in here. I dropped off my bike, put on chapstick, grabbed my race belt, drank some water, and headed for the run while fixing my hair.
The Run
- The first mile was really slow and SUPER painful. Like someone had ripped open my calves and poured acid into them. I had to convince myself that it would stop as soon as I worked out some of the lactic acid.
- I have to pee! Pulled off and peed in the most secluded spot I could find -- in some shrubs.
-My legs didn't stop burning until after the THIRD mile.
+ After the third mile, I felt like my pace was picking up. My legs were feeling like themselves again and I was actually passing people that had already passed me!
+ After I hit the 4 mile mark, I felt great!! I sprinted at the end and finished strong!

So obviously there is much room for improvement. I've recently bought a pair of clipless shoes and pedals for my bike, which will be installed this week. I've also purchased a new Xterra wetsuit that was delivered today! So the next few weeks will focus on getting long rides in, practicing swim-bike and bike-run transitions, and as much open water practice as I can.

This morning was my first morning training session and it went really well!! I ran 8 miles in 72 minutes and felt like I could keep running for hours! I'm going to try and do as much training as I possibly can in the next few weeks -- and I will definitely be blogging about it on my lunch breaks (like I am now). I've already been super focused on nutrition, but after tonight's celebration of my roommates birthday, I'm not drinking a drop of alcohol until after the 70.3!

Until next time.....

No Half Marathon for this chick

On Wednesday after writing my last post, I hit the pool to get some laps in. I was a little disappointed when I got to the pool and saw that they changed the lanes around to be 50yards instead of 50meters, but I survived. I warmed up with some drills for 250yards, then ended up swimming 36 laps, resting for ~30 seconds after every 4 laps (100 yards). It took me a while to get into a rhythm, but once I was on my 10-11th I felt really comfortable with my pace and breathing. Therefore, I just kept going. After 40 minutes of swimming, I felt a little fatigued so I called it quits.

Later that evening, Heather and I did 30 minutes of Denise Austin's Power Yoga at Nargle's house. I slept like a baby that night!

Yesterday, I took it down a notch and ended up biking for 30 minutes and then doing some light core stuff (pushups, situps, etc). And today is my day off since I will be playing in volleyball tournaments all weekend. I made the decision not to go to Chicago this weekend because my best friend who was going to run it with me decided not to run it afterall. I also don't feel like my body is in shape to handle 13miles comfortably. I mean, don't get me wrong, I can do it. But it will be really painful!!! I'd rather ease into it to avoid overtraining and a possible stress fracture (that's my worst fear by the way!!!)

I've also been having some knee issues (mainly tendonitis) which is THE WORST right after I stop running. I iced my knees a little last night, and they are in no shape right now to go for a run today. They just need some rest, more icing, and a good dose of glucosamine, and I'll be good to go for my weekend of volleyball! Playing co-ed grass doubles on Saturday and Sunday with 2 great and super fun guys so I'm really pumped. I've never played doubles in grass before, but I think I'll be alright since I'm used to being slower in the sand. Let's just hope the weather is good!!

Time to get back to being productive, TGIF!

99 days!

Swagger wins the GOLD!

Last Monday I ended up doing an intense upper body workout which caused a lot of extra soreness throughout the week. By the time Thursday rolled around (after 2 days (5 matches) of volleyball), my upper body needed some serious massaging. Luckily, there was a full training staff at the tournament so they were my best friends while working on the knots in my muscles.

Let me just take a moment here to brag about my volleyball team, Swagger. We dominated at Nationals and ended up winning the gold medal! Talent-wise we have A LOT of depth. We had 9 girls contributing to the win, and each girl did their job almost flawlessly to pull out an undefeated record (10-0). Aside from talent, however, my team is super fun and I am in love with every single one of them! We all get along REALLY well, and habitually laugh hysterically at everyone's ridiculousness and stupid comments. It was an amazing week, I met some great people and ended it all with a pretty intense celebration on Saturday night. So intense, in fact, that it took me almost 2 whole days to recover from it (and from the long trip back to Boston as well).

I've decided that Saturday was the last night that I will be drinking until after my half-marathon on Sunday. Yesterday, I went for my first run in over a week. My goal was to run 5 miles, but once I hit the 5 mile mark, I didn't want to stop. I probably could have ran at least 10 yesterday, but since this is my tapering week and my shins were starting to ache, I called it quits after 6.3 miles. As soon as I stopped running, I started walking back to my house and it was REALLY painful on the knees. I've been given some great advice to ice those guys right after I run, so I'm going to start doing that. I've also been slacking in the stretching department -- I can't tell you the last time that I did yoga! So I'm going to have to fix that this week.

Today is a great day to hit the pool and relieve some muscle tension. Also, I think an tall glass of yoga is in order for this evening!!!

Only 103 days until the Half-Ironman!!!

10.3 miles. Woa.

My lower body was pretty sore after Thursdays workout so I thought a swim would be in order to relieve some of the achiness.

I hit the pool on Friday and worked on swimming 100m straight without stopping. I did that 10 times, and I had a pretty short recovery time between each set (>30 seconds). I didn't stop there though. When I got finally got home from getting work done on campus, I ended up taking the dogs for a 90 minute walk to Castle Island because it was gorgeous out. By the time I got home from the walk, I was ready for bed! I ended up going out, but called it a night around 10:30 because I couldn't stand in my heels anymore!

I took it easy on Saturday and other than playing a little volleyball on the beach with Mike and Liz, I only did about 30 minutes of P90X yoga. Then on Sunday, I ran 10 miles along the Charles River. It was a little rough...especially since I started losing steam at 5 miles. But I pressed on, and realized that once I hit 8 miles it was kinda difficult to stop. I probably could have ran the full 13.1 miles yesterday, but decided to let my body recover from the stress that I just went through. Plus, I was hungry and getting dehydrated (It was 80 degrees!). When I finally stopped after 10.3 miles (1h 44min), I could hardly walk. My knees throbbed and my hips were pretty sore. I walked around for about 5 minutes and got a good stretch in before taking a cold shower.

This morning when I woke up, I had some trouble walking down the stairs because my knees were so sore! I took Jack up to the park after breakfast, and that seemed to help loosen them up. They are fine now, but definitely think I should have iced them after the run yesterday.

I was going to take today and tomorrow off completely, but I just can't. So I'm on my way to the gym to get an upper body and core workout in. Tomorrow will be my off day since I'll be traveling for the majority of it. Can NOT wait to arrive in Phoenix tomorrow with my Swagger ladies!!!! WOOOOO!!!

And I'm back...

First of all, let me just say that I haven't been doing nothing. However, since I haven't written in so long, I can't remember everything. I've also found that because I wasn't writing about it, I wasn't as motivated as normal. I will admit that I've been slacking a little bit, and I'm getting a little frustrated trying to get back to the point I was at before I took a week off -- very stupid move. It set me back a ton!

Since I'm pretty much starting over, I've decided to just start with what I did today and go from there.

During my lunch break, I headed to the pool and swam 500 meters just to clear my mind. It worked and I was fairly productive for the rest of the afternoon. Then I ran 5.61 miles up to Castle Island (with a short pit stop at the 1.2 mile mark to visit my Wednesday night VBallers). Since my partner was in Cancun, we didn't play women's doubles tonight. Would have been nice to play, but glad I got some tri-training in.

I was planning on riding my bike this evening, but had some trouble with putting air in the tires. I tried 2 different pumps, so I think it's a valve problem. I think it's about time to take it to the bike shop and maybe invest in some new wheels for it so I can finally get it on the road and not have to worry about getting a flat. Until then, I will have to settle for riding on the stationary bike in the gym.

Less than 18 weeks to go until the Half-Iron man, but only18 days until the Half-Marathon in Chicago with Marre. I plan on running a 10 mile run before next Monday because I'm leaving for Phoenix for VB nationals on Tuesday evening.

A little cross-training and P90X is in store for tomorrow....my favorite! :)
