Exercise is good for the soul.

Didn't get to do a morning workout today because I had to be into work at 6am. Since we were sampling for pharmaceuticals, I wasn't allowed to drink caffiene until we were done sampling. Therefore, I was exhausted ALL damn day and finally had caffiene at 2pm. When I finally got home from work, I was feeling a bit cranky and slightly depressed. This is most likely due to the fact that I didn't get very much sleep the night before and it wasn't very good sleep either since I was tossing and turning all night. After packing up some of my stuff (I'm moving out of Southie to Cambridge at the end of August), I eventually ate dinner and then biked for 35 minutes around Southie until I ran out of daylight. During the ride, I tackled some pretty big hills, but it was kind of annoying to have to slow down or stop at each intersection. After my ride, I dropped my bike off home and went on a 45 minute run. I think I'm falling in love with running. I didn't really want to stop once I hit the 30 minute point. The only reason I stopped is because my left knee was starting to get a little sore and I decided to stop so I could ice it before I went to bed. After I was done with my run, I felt great! I wasn't tired and I didn't feel depressed at all! :)

This morning I went down to the South Boston Yoga Studio for an hour long group class before work. I've been in need of a good full body stretch and I definitely got it! Some of the positions were a little uncomfortable on my knees at first until my body warmed up a bit. I feel great today, and can't wait to go for a swim in the pool this afternoon! I'm going to be doing a lot more yoga in the future because I love the effects it has on my body and mind (and soul)!

My wetsuit arrived yesterday, so I'm hoping to get in an open water session this weekend!

and I'm back!

Holy moly it's been a while since my last post! So much has changed in my life since then and I've been trying to train when I can! Currently, my life is absolutely AMAZING, but it didn't come without a cost. I made the extremely difficult decision to give away my favorite thing in the entire world -- my dog Jack. It makes me teary eyed whenever I think about him, or see his pictures but I gave to him away to a great home. He's loving life with his new family and making others just as happy (if not happier) than he made me.

At the end of June, I started my big-girl job working 3 days a week in addition to my on-going research with UMASS. I found that I was home less and less, and therefore my dogs were getting less and less exercise and attention. So Jack has been adopted, and Otis is still being fostered by an amazing family in Salem, MA. Other than training for this triathlon, having 2 jobs and being dog-less, I've also rather unexpectedly acquired an absolutely amazing boyfriend. My last post was actually a couple of hours before our first unofficial date . I have not stopped training because of my recent acquisition, but the time that I had spent on blogging was replaced with spending time with him. The short story is this: when I thought my life couldn't get any better, it did.

Ok so how about my training?! I had a slight mishap involving me on a bike and a car. I was in Methuen, riding with my new favorite training partner and riding in the shoulder, and the car made a left hand turn right in front of me. I wasn't going very fast, but I still ran into the car and fell. Other than a banged up and bruised knee, I was fine and my bike is still currently still rideable. The driver and passenger of the car basically got out to make sure that I was still alive, and then took off. Awesome.

I am getting REALLY nervous about this race which is ONLY 32 days away! This past weekend, I competed in a time trial Sprint Triathlon (1/2 mile swim, 12.7 mile bike, 4.4 mile run) and finished in just under 2 hours. It was not my best performance since there were many things that went wrong, but it was definitely GREAT practice and a way to get the kinks out before the big race. I think my biggest pitfall was that I played in a doubles volleyball tournament with my pal Zack the day before. I knew the race wasn't going to be a breeze for me and figured I would finish no matter what condition I was in, but I just wanted to get some open water and transition practice in. I may not have done well in the race, but we still won the open level tourney!

Here are the pros and cons of the race:
Pre-Race
- Ate bowl of oatmeal and drank a protein shake and 1/2 of an Iced Coffee on the way
- Had to pay for a one-day USAT membership card because mine had expired
+ Arrived early, set up transition area in a jiffy, and didn't forget anything!
- Got in the water to warm up, and wished I had a wetsuit. Water temp was 77 degrees, but since it was only 7am, the air temp was around 60-65 degrees and I was FREEZING while standing there waiting for my wave to start.
The Swim
- Started at the front of the pack, got trampled on by all the stronger swimmers and choked on some water. Next time, I'm starting in the middle so it's not as hectic for me.
- It took me a while to convince myself to calm down, and I felt like I couldn't get a full breath of air. I finally relaxed after I rounded the first buoy (there were 3 total). I don't know if it's because my lungs were constricted from the cold water, or because I started the swim too strong, but I couldn't hold my breath for more than 2 strokes. In the pool, I can easily breathe every 3, sometimes 4, strokes but that was not happening. I settled into this rhythm, and kept looking up to see where I was going to make sure I wasn't completely off course.
-My goggles fogged up, so it was hard to see where I was going.
Transition 1
+ Without a wetsuit, this went pretty quickly.
- I spent a minute or so wiping the sand off my feet, so next time I will bring a dishpan and fill it with water so I can rinse off before putting bike shoes on. I didn't have my bike shoes for this particular race though, so I had to make sure all the sand was off before putting my shoes and socks on.
+ I grabbed a package of Clif Shot Blocks, threw them in the back of my jersey and put on my helmet.
- Forgot to bring my chapstick.
The Bike
- Burning quads for the first 2-3 miles.
+ Drank accelorade after mile 1
- At around mile 5, I was following a group of people who didn't turn where they were supposed to. By the time we realized it, we were a mile or so off course and turned back. I ended up biking 14.8 miles instead of 12.7 like the rest of the racers (ugh.)
- I was told that the course was "fast and flat". That was a lie. There were sooooo many rolling hills, and therefore, my legs were burning for the entire 14.8 miles.
- This was my longest bike ride of the year thus far. I'm a slacker, i know. But I definitely felt the effects of not training for this ride!
- I finally dismounted my bike and headed into T2.
Transition 2
- Had trouble putting one foot in front of the other when I got off the bike. My thoughts: "&^%$%!!! I can't hardly walk. I probably look like I'm hammered right now. How the @*&$# am supposed to run?? It's okay, my legs will loosen up and stop burning when I jog it out a little."
+ Didn't spend very long in here. I dropped off my bike, put on chapstick, grabbed my race belt, drank some water, and headed for the run while fixing my hair.
The Run
- The first mile was really slow and SUPER painful. Like someone had ripped open my calves and poured acid into them. I had to convince myself that it would stop as soon as I worked out some of the lactic acid.
- I have to pee! Pulled off and peed in the most secluded spot I could find -- in some shrubs.
-My legs didn't stop burning until after the THIRD mile.
+ After the third mile, I felt like my pace was picking up. My legs were feeling like themselves again and I was actually passing people that had already passed me!
+ After I hit the 4 mile mark, I felt great!! I sprinted at the end and finished strong!

So obviously there is much room for improvement. I've recently bought a pair of clipless shoes and pedals for my bike, which will be installed this week. I've also purchased a new Xterra wetsuit that was delivered today! So the next few weeks will focus on getting long rides in, practicing swim-bike and bike-run transitions, and as much open water practice as I can.

This morning was my first morning training session and it went really well!! I ran 8 miles in 72 minutes and felt like I could keep running for hours! I'm going to try and do as much training as I possibly can in the next few weeks -- and I will definitely be blogging about it on my lunch breaks (like I am now). I've already been super focused on nutrition, but after tonight's celebration of my roommates birthday, I'm not drinking a drop of alcohol until after the 70.3!

Until next time.....

No Half Marathon for this chick

On Wednesday after writing my last post, I hit the pool to get some laps in. I was a little disappointed when I got to the pool and saw that they changed the lanes around to be 50yards instead of 50meters, but I survived. I warmed up with some drills for 250yards, then ended up swimming 36 laps, resting for ~30 seconds after every 4 laps (100 yards). It took me a while to get into a rhythm, but once I was on my 10-11th I felt really comfortable with my pace and breathing. Therefore, I just kept going. After 40 minutes of swimming, I felt a little fatigued so I called it quits.

Later that evening, Heather and I did 30 minutes of Denise Austin's Power Yoga at Nargle's house. I slept like a baby that night!

Yesterday, I took it down a notch and ended up biking for 30 minutes and then doing some light core stuff (pushups, situps, etc). And today is my day off since I will be playing in volleyball tournaments all weekend. I made the decision not to go to Chicago this weekend because my best friend who was going to run it with me decided not to run it afterall. I also don't feel like my body is in shape to handle 13miles comfortably. I mean, don't get me wrong, I can do it. But it will be really painful!!! I'd rather ease into it to avoid overtraining and a possible stress fracture (that's my worst fear by the way!!!)

I've also been having some knee issues (mainly tendonitis) which is THE WORST right after I stop running. I iced my knees a little last night, and they are in no shape right now to go for a run today. They just need some rest, more icing, and a good dose of glucosamine, and I'll be good to go for my weekend of volleyball! Playing co-ed grass doubles on Saturday and Sunday with 2 great and super fun guys so I'm really pumped. I've never played doubles in grass before, but I think I'll be alright since I'm used to being slower in the sand. Let's just hope the weather is good!!

Time to get back to being productive, TGIF!

99 days!

Swagger wins the GOLD!

Last Monday I ended up doing an intense upper body workout which caused a lot of extra soreness throughout the week. By the time Thursday rolled around (after 2 days (5 matches) of volleyball), my upper body needed some serious massaging. Luckily, there was a full training staff at the tournament so they were my best friends while working on the knots in my muscles.

Let me just take a moment here to brag about my volleyball team, Swagger. We dominated at Nationals and ended up winning the gold medal! Talent-wise we have A LOT of depth. We had 9 girls contributing to the win, and each girl did their job almost flawlessly to pull out an undefeated record (10-0). Aside from talent, however, my team is super fun and I am in love with every single one of them! We all get along REALLY well, and habitually laugh hysterically at everyone's ridiculousness and stupid comments. It was an amazing week, I met some great people and ended it all with a pretty intense celebration on Saturday night. So intense, in fact, that it took me almost 2 whole days to recover from it (and from the long trip back to Boston as well).

I've decided that Saturday was the last night that I will be drinking until after my half-marathon on Sunday. Yesterday, I went for my first run in over a week. My goal was to run 5 miles, but once I hit the 5 mile mark, I didn't want to stop. I probably could have ran at least 10 yesterday, but since this is my tapering week and my shins were starting to ache, I called it quits after 6.3 miles. As soon as I stopped running, I started walking back to my house and it was REALLY painful on the knees. I've been given some great advice to ice those guys right after I run, so I'm going to start doing that. I've also been slacking in the stretching department -- I can't tell you the last time that I did yoga! So I'm going to have to fix that this week.

Today is a great day to hit the pool and relieve some muscle tension. Also, I think an tall glass of yoga is in order for this evening!!!

Only 103 days until the Half-Ironman!!!

10.3 miles. Woa.

My lower body was pretty sore after Thursdays workout so I thought a swim would be in order to relieve some of the achiness.

I hit the pool on Friday and worked on swimming 100m straight without stopping. I did that 10 times, and I had a pretty short recovery time between each set (>30 seconds). I didn't stop there though. When I got finally got home from getting work done on campus, I ended up taking the dogs for a 90 minute walk to Castle Island because it was gorgeous out. By the time I got home from the walk, I was ready for bed! I ended up going out, but called it a night around 10:30 because I couldn't stand in my heels anymore!

I took it easy on Saturday and other than playing a little volleyball on the beach with Mike and Liz, I only did about 30 minutes of P90X yoga. Then on Sunday, I ran 10 miles along the Charles River. It was a little rough...especially since I started losing steam at 5 miles. But I pressed on, and realized that once I hit 8 miles it was kinda difficult to stop. I probably could have ran the full 13.1 miles yesterday, but decided to let my body recover from the stress that I just went through. Plus, I was hungry and getting dehydrated (It was 80 degrees!). When I finally stopped after 10.3 miles (1h 44min), I could hardly walk. My knees throbbed and my hips were pretty sore. I walked around for about 5 minutes and got a good stretch in before taking a cold shower.

This morning when I woke up, I had some trouble walking down the stairs because my knees were so sore! I took Jack up to the park after breakfast, and that seemed to help loosen them up. They are fine now, but definitely think I should have iced them after the run yesterday.

I was going to take today and tomorrow off completely, but I just can't. So I'm on my way to the gym to get an upper body and core workout in. Tomorrow will be my off day since I'll be traveling for the majority of it. Can NOT wait to arrive in Phoenix tomorrow with my Swagger ladies!!!! WOOOOO!!!

And I'm back...

First of all, let me just say that I haven't been doing nothing. However, since I haven't written in so long, I can't remember everything. I've also found that because I wasn't writing about it, I wasn't as motivated as normal. I will admit that I've been slacking a little bit, and I'm getting a little frustrated trying to get back to the point I was at before I took a week off -- very stupid move. It set me back a ton!

Since I'm pretty much starting over, I've decided to just start with what I did today and go from there.

During my lunch break, I headed to the pool and swam 500 meters just to clear my mind. It worked and I was fairly productive for the rest of the afternoon. Then I ran 5.61 miles up to Castle Island (with a short pit stop at the 1.2 mile mark to visit my Wednesday night VBallers). Since my partner was in Cancun, we didn't play women's doubles tonight. Would have been nice to play, but glad I got some tri-training in.

I was planning on riding my bike this evening, but had some trouble with putting air in the tires. I tried 2 different pumps, so I think it's a valve problem. I think it's about time to take it to the bike shop and maybe invest in some new wheels for it so I can finally get it on the road and not have to worry about getting a flat. Until then, I will have to settle for riding on the stationary bike in the gym.

Less than 18 weeks to go until the Half-Iron man, but only18 days until the Half-Marathon in Chicago with Marre. I plan on running a 10 mile run before next Monday because I'm leaving for Phoenix for VB nationals on Tuesday evening.

A little cross-training and P90X is in store for tomorrow....my favorite! :)

I'm a slacker.

Holy moly. I have been slacking. Not only with the blog writing but with the training too.....I will write more tomorrow after I'm done with my last final!

Thursday: Recovery day

Friday: Ran 7.4 miles!!!! For the first time ever, I ran more than 6 miles on Friday. I ran the first 1.3 with my dogs so it was a nice little warmup for the remainder of the run. Needless to say, it was great and I felt awesome when I was done!!! Can't wait until I hit 8!!!

Saturday: off day. I SHOULD have swam, but it was 80* and sunny, so I opted to spend some time at the beach with the roomies working on my tan instead

Hello ab muscles, I'm Earth. Have we met?

Thursday: Got to the pool later than expected so I only had about 20 minutes to swim before it closed. Therefore, I swam hard and worked on my speed in the little time that I had.

Friday: Biked 17.2 miles on the stationary (in 65 minutes), then ran a mile on the treadmill. Also did some ab stuff :)

Saturday: off day

Sunday: 6 mile run around Southie (~53 minutes)...gorgeous day! Then an ab workout.

I've started to notice that my 6-pack is coming along quite nicely! In addition to all the training I've been doing in the past couple of months, I've really been focusing on my nutrition and eating clean whenever possible. I had thought I was one of those girls who wasn't able to get a ripped stomach, but apparently I was wrong! It's really nice to see all my hard work paying off! WOOOO! :)

150 days left!

Wow, it's been almost a week since I've blogged last. Let's see if I can remember what I did...

Thursday: Swim 1100m

Friday: Off

Saturday: Volleyball Tourney at MIT (fun of course, but no victory for Swagger)

Sunday: Migraine = In bed ALL day. Ugh.

Marathon Monday: Yoga with Heather, then ran 6 miles AND a core workout. Then went to check out the finish line of the Boston Marathon. It was AWESOME and such an inspiring experience! The most amazing part for me was watching the U.S. soldiers (Marines I think) in their full uniform with FULL packs on. They were exhausted by the end, but they finished and I was amazed! It made me want to run a marathon, but we will see how this 70.3 goes first...

Tuesday: 1000m swim

Wednesday: Morning yoga. Then after breakfast/dog walk, I ran up to the track, did the following workout:
- 30 V-sits
- 10 burpees
- 400m run
- 20 pushups
- 30 crunches
- 20 situp twists
- 400m run
- 40 prisoner squats
- 15 pushups
- 400m run
- 40 lunges
- 20 dips
- 400m run
- 15 burpees

Then ran home and did some arm stuff before getting ready to head to campus for a meeting. Headed back home now to walk the dogs and get a quick bike ride in before heading up the the North End for dinner at a friend's house. I seriously love my life -- especially on GORGEOUS days like today!

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

Tuesday: Biked 13 miles in 45 minutes (at the gym)

Today: No yoga this morning, because I was up coughing for a large portion of the night. I did manage to run for 32 minutes, do 30 lunges and 15 Santana pushups, run 400m, 20 V-sits and 10 burpees, then run home (4 minutes) though.

Now: exhausted and ready for bed.

Making progress in the pool! Yessss

Yesterday I swam 26 laps...which is 1300m. They switched the direction of the lanes so that they go through the deep end. I like this way better because it's longer (though it feels shorter to me) and more representative of open water. Therefore, it allows me to know what it's like to not be able to touch the bottom. I also felt like my endurance has improved significantly. Previously, I had been breathing every 3 strokes, but yesterday I was up to 4 and sometimes even every 5 strokes! I've decided to try and get in the pool at least 3 times a week for a while since this is my weakest event...

Woke up and did yoga this morning, and I was feeling kind of sore from Sunday's workout (especially in the pectoral/shoulder region). The swim yesterday temporarily alleviated but eventually added to my muscle soreness, but I'm not complaining. I love the feeling of sore muscles because it means that my workouts are effective. Today is a bike day. I will probably hit the stationary at the gym this afternoon so that I can read while I'm biking.

I've also come to realize how much I LOVE cross-training and training for a mutli-sport event. I like being able to do something different everyday and I never get bored. I am slightly worried about my A.D.D. and the bike leg though because 56 miles will most likely take me about 2 hours to complete. I'm no where near 56 miles yet (my max is 20 right now), but I'm going to have to start upping my distances for each event here soon. I can't bike on the stationary for more than an hour because I'm bored by then, so I think it's time to hit the road with my Cannondale. She's in desparate need of a tune up though, and I seem to have misplaced my helmet, waterbottle and aerobar pads. They are all together somewhere, but I'm afraid they are in a box in the basement of my parents house in Rochester. I won't be able to get them until I breeze through town in May. :(

2 hours is such a loooooong time for me, but I will be okay once I find an outdoor route and a good audio book to listen to. I'm also doing a half-marathon on June 13 in Chicago, and which is less than 9 weeks away. I think I will be okay, as long as I come up with some kind of training schedule and try to stick to it as much as possible and use my swimming, biking, and volleyball for my crosstraining days.

Ok enough of this rambling, I have to get some stuff done for school. Later.

5 Mile Race in Southie

Ran the Good Sports 5 Mile Run in Southie on Sunday morning, and was pretty happy about my time. Being allergy season, I had some issues with my lungs and throat but I had a great partner to keep me going. My friend and colleague, Paul, who I thought was just going to smoke me in the race, actually ran with me the whole time and kept a nice 8 min. mile pace. I was never one to run with people because I like to get in the zone and think about anything but running, but it was a nice change up and really improved my overall performance.

Anyways, I ran the 5 miles in 40:36 and I'm pretty happy about that. After the race, I ran some errands with my roomie and was feeling pretty great. So great in fact, that her and I decided to go up to the stadium and do an interval workout. Here's what we did:

2 minutes bleachers
15 pushups
10 dips
2 minutes bleachers
30 crunches
10 burpees
2 minutes bleachers
20 single leg deadlifts (10 each side)
10 inclined pushups
400m run

So yesterday was a good day and I slept better last night than I have in a few days. This morning I had plans to wake up at 6 to walk the dogs before yoga but since I didn't go to bed until 1130, I was in no mood to get out of bed when the alarm went off. I eventually rolled out of bed at 6:45, woke up Heather, did yoga, and then took the dogs for a long walk. Today is a beautiful day! I've come to appreciate the good days more and more especially after the awful rainy, cold days we had last week.

Now that I'm fully awake and slightly exercised, I can start my day of getting work done. I think today is going to be a swim day because my joints took a beating yesterday...

Stupid Migraine.

Wednesday was a beautiful day out, so I rode my bike to school to get some work done, then ended up going to the gym to ride the stationary bike for 30 minutes. I like the stationary bike because it lets me read while I'm working out and I feel extra productive! My workout wasn't as long as I wanted because I had other obligations. Before I went to the gym, I had a lot of nervous energy and anxiety so the workout helped to alleviate that. Then of course, I had to ride my bike home that evening and by the time I got home, I was a sweaty, hot mess!

Yesterday I took the day off because I had to wake up at 445 to get to a research conference in Amherst. It was also the first time in a LONG TIME that I didn't eat a good breakfast. I had a protein shake on the way, but didn't have time to stop for something to eat on the way. I also figured that the "free breakfast" meant something other than sugar-filled pastries and muffins, but I was wrong. Since I was starving, I scarfed down a muffin and couldn't wait until lunch time. The lunch that was provided was better than the breakfast, and relatively healthy for conference food. By the time my colleagues and I left to go home, I was hungry again (and exhausted!) and stopped at Dunkin' Donuts for a coffee and a bagel. When I got finally got home and was outside walking the dogs, it hit me. I suddenly got a horribly, awful migraine. I tried eating something for dinner, but felt nauseas. So I took some Excedrin PM and went to bed at 8pm. So with the stress I've been under this week (from training and work deadlines), a sudden shift in weather (from 90* and sunny to 40* and rainy), my poor eating habits and lack of sleep, the migraine was bound to happen.

This morning, I felt a little better but still feeling a little off. I'm debating whether to take today off or attempt to do a light workout. I will see how I feel in a few hours...

Monday, April 5, 2010

the sun's still shining when I close my eyes...

25 minute bike ride around Southie (windy day, so my legs were working over time)
400m run
Prisoner Squats (30)
Pushups (15)
400m run
Sit-Ups with Twist (30)
Mountain Climbers (20)
Dips (20)
400m run
Front lunges with knee lifts (20)
Back lunges with side kick (20)
V-Sits (20)
400m run
Burpees (10)
Ride home.

High five to me!

Productive Weekend

Good morning, world. Just did my morning yoga, and realized that I haven't blogged all weekend. I didn't get much sleep this weekend, but I did get a lot done and managed to get some training in. It was strange not having a volleyball tournament to play in yet surprising how much I accomplished instead of playing/sitting for 8 hours.

On Saturday afternoon, Heather and I walked up to campus and went for a swim. I only swam 800 meters, but I swam hard for each lap. I was working on my speed and cardiovascular endurance. It was frustrating because I was very winded after each lap, and exhausted from only getting 4 hours of sleep the night before. At least I did something though.

After we got home, we drove up to Salem to get Otis. (It's sooooo nice to have him back!!) Then we spent like 4 hours scrubbing and organizing the entire kitchen and went to bed. I didn't get to sleep in like I wanted to because Otis decided to wake me up at 5:45am to go outside. Then when I finally fell back asleep, he woke me up again at 6:30. Hopefully that was only a one time deal, because I was so exhausted yesterday!

I did, however, manage to go for a 5.5 mile run and then a short walk with the roomie and dogs. All in all, a pretty good Easter weekend. :)

GREAT Friday.

After my morning yoga ritual with Heather, I took Jack for an hour long walk. After the walk I was feeling a little sluggish, and the thought of bagging my run for today had crossed my mind. But then I thought about my short and long term goals. My short term goal is getting a good time (under 45 minutes) for the 5 mile race in Southie that I just registered for. The race is next Sunday and only about a block from my apartment. Perfect!

A longer term goal is to complete a half-marathon in less than 2 hours. I'm planning on doing this in Chicago on June 13 with my best friend/college roommate, Marre. The ultimate goal, of course, is to complete the 70.3 in Syracuse on 9/19.

Now back to TODAY. It has FINALLY come to the point where I can workout outside in a tanktop and running shorts. Hallelujah!!! It's around 70 degrees today with a slight breeze down by the harbor (which is where I ran). So with the great weather, and my goals in mind, I was super pumped for my workout today.

When I started my run, my goal was to run 4 miles and then come home to do a crossfit workout in the house. While I was running, I decided that instead of working out inside, I would run up to the stadium and do a bleacher/track workout. So that's exactly what I did.

Here's my workout for today AFTER the 4 mile run (which took approximately 38 minutes)

2 minutes bleachers
20 inclined pushups
2 minutes bleachers
20 V-sits
2 minutes bleachers
20 Santana Pushups (with leg lift)
30 second rest
30 walking lunges
400m jog
10 burpees
400m jog
50 crunches

Run home (1/2 mile).

My knees are starting to throb because this is the first time in a while that I've run on the pavement. Nothing a little ibuprofen can't fix... :)

Rodney Yee

Woke up at 645 this morning without an alarm. I didn't do yoga with Heather this morning because she had to go into work early, so I walked Jack when I woke up then came back to enjoy my coffee and oatmeal. Then after getting some work done and answering some e-mails, I did an intense one-hour session of power yoga with Rodney Yee. My back hurts from all the upward dogs, but the rest of me feels great.

Definitely taking today off from going to the gym. I don't have much time anyways so it works out. Now its time to be productive!

Yoga and Crossfit and Bike and Run

Woke up at 640 today and it was a bit rough this morning. I called Heather to wake her up, then took Jack outside. The coffee was set to brew at 630, so knowing that it was ready got my ass up and out of bed. It also helps to have something to wake up for (yoga), and a workout partner is clutch!!

So after some coffee, we did 20 minutes of Yoga (Denise Austin's Yoga Body Burn is awesome). I was really sore and stiff at the beginning, but towards the end I loosened up and felt a lot better.

Then I ate breakfast (power oatmeal with fresh strawberries and sliced banana, and a protein shake) and did some work while I was digesting.

Then, did the following cross fit workout (which I made up):

10 pullups (with assistance from my jump-training band)
20 burpees
30 prisoner squats
40 walking lunges
50 crunches on physioball
40 high knees
30 pushups (with legs on ball)
20 dips
10 Santana pushups (inclined)

Total workout time: 10 minutes, 15 seconds.

So far, I'm feeling really goooooood! :)

I don't have class today but I'm still plan on biking later, but I have a few errands to run and some work to catch up on.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Finally got to the gym at 4pm this afternoon. I rode the bike for 70 minutes (20.33 miles), and then hobbled over to the treadmill and ran a mile. This mile took me a whopping 10 minutes and 17 seconds to complete. Then cooled down by walking for 10 minutes because by that point I was a sweaty mess.
Now I'm home, just ate a good meal of multigrain pasta and turkey meatballs. Now I'm enjoying a glass of wine and I'm seriously about to fall asleep. Definitely going to hit the hay pretty early this evening so I can wake up by 630 tomorrow!
Obviously I'm going to do yoga in the morning because it helps to wake me up, but I think that's going to be it for the day. I have a feeling that after today's workouts, my body is going to need some recovery time. It's supposed to be a beautiful day (finally!!), so I will probably take Jack for a long walk.
Hasta mañana...
Dear Rain, Please go away! Love, Karen
Woke up this morningat 6:30 (AGAIN!!!) and did power yoga with Heather. Then headed to campus to meet a colleague and experienced swimmer, Hannah Banana Dean, for a quick swim lesson. She was very helpful and gave me some pointers and drills on how to increase speed and become more efficient. Thanks Hannah! I ran out of steam quickly so I was only in the pool for a total time of 35 minutes. Not only was I exhausted, but I was also STARVING. So I showered and went back to my desk to scarf down my second lunch.
All in all, a pretty productive day so far. And it's STILL raining. My poor dog hasn't had a decent walk in 2 days. Ususally on rainy days, I want to do nothing but sleep. Since I've been in pretty high spirits lately (because I love my life), I've been getting the proper amount of sleep (7.5 hours) and it's good quality sleep because of all the working out I've been doing.
Since I don't have class tomorrow, I'm thinking of doing a "light" crossfit/strength training workout at home after yoga in the morning. and then going for a long bike ride in the afternoon. If for some reason the rain does stop, I will fill up the air in my tires on my hybrid and hit the road!! (I'm not ready for my road bike just yet, and it wouldn't be very fun if the roads are still wet from the massive amounts of flooding in the area). I'm pretty sure the rain will not be done by tomorrow, so I will most likely go to campus to do this. Also, if I'm on campus, I can work on crossing off the 1,001 things on my To Do list for this week.
Thinking of doing a half-marathon sometime in June or July in prep for the race. It will either be in Boston/western MA, Rochester or Chicago. My weekends are pretty full this summer between weddings, bridal showers, bachelorette parties and volleyball tournaments so finding the time to do one is my biggest challenge.
Thats all for now.
Less than 25 weeks to go!!
Thursday and Friday of last week, I did nothing. :(
Saturday I played in a volleyball tournament in Rhode Island with my Swagger ladies, and we WON!
Even though yesterday was a GORGEOUS day for a long run around Southie, I didn't end up going at all. I woke up later than I had anticipated (10am), took Jack up to the park, made myself an awesome breakfast (egg white omelette with potatoes, green peppers, onions and tomatoes) then drove out to Sudbury (30 minute drive) to help my volleyball team sell food to raise money for Nationals in Phoenix in June. Then when I got home, I still had to write a 10 page paper on assessing ecosystem service value of salt marshes (with emphasis on political and economic influences). It wasn't a completely lazy day, however, since my roommate and I did a quick yoga session before heading to bed.
This morning was a milestone for me. I woke up at 6:30am and woke up Heather for yet another yoga session before she had to go to work. Afterwards, I felt great and ended up walking Jack, making breakfast, AND finishing my paper all before 9:30am!!! On the days that I don't have to wake up for anything, I usually sleep until at least 10. Even when my alarm is set for 9! Since waking up with the sun this morning, I've been rather productive with my time and just arrived back to my cubicle from the gym to write a quick post.
Today is a rainy day, so I spent some time on the treadmill. 65 minutes to be exact. I warmed up for 5, ran 6 miles in 55 minutes, then cooled down for 5 minutes. Then, I did a modified Kim Strother's ab workout (google her, she's amazing...and my idol.). Other than my ankles throbbing and my foot tingling, I feel pretty good right now. And it's only 3:30pm!!! A couple more hours of work time, then it's homeward bound to walk my baby boy in the rain.
QT with the Treadmill
Ran 5.75 miles on the treadmill in 55 minutes. Not too bad considering that the first 35 minutes consisted of intervals. Can't wait to go for a run outside again. I think Sunday will be the day for that! (Saturday is a VB tourney of course)
Boring post, sorry. Must get back to studying for my chemistry midterm tomorrow...
Train Delay
I got to the gym a little later than expected last evening due to public transit delays, so I only had about 40 minutes to workout before class. I ended up riding the stationary bike for 10 miles, and then walked into class a sweaty mess. I would have liked to ride at least 15 miles, but I went hard for 10 and was satisfied when I got off the bike and my legs were sore.
The rain finally stopped here, but it's freezing outside, so I will most likely head to the gym on campus for my run and an upper body/core workout. Yay for runnng days!!!! :)
Swim Day
1000m swim today. My sore shoulder from yesterday's volleyball tournament kept me from going any longer. I'm going to have to focus on strengthening my rotator cuff/shoulder muscles if I'm going to continue playing volleyball while training for the 70.3. It's rough being a quad-athlete, but someone's gotta do it!
Workout at GCHS
Today is a GORGEOUS day in Rochester, NY so I had to make the most of it. I decided it would be a running day since my lungs couldn't handle a long run in Colorado. So I ran up to my high school track to do a workout which is about 1.5 miles from my parents house.
My workout:
Walking lunges- 20 on each side
400m run
Run bleachers for 2 minutes
400m run
Run bleachers for 2 minutes
400m run
Side lunges- 20 on each side
Backward walking lunges - 20
400m run
Run bleachers for 2 minutes
800m run
Then I ran home, and did some core stuff. Not too shabby! :)
Total running distance: about 5.5 miles
St. Patrick's Day workout
Wow. That workout was awesome! I probably could have stayed there all day if my lungs were adjusted to the altitude. When we got to Red Rocks, we warmed up with a light jog on a really steep hill. Thats when I started feeling the oxygen deprivation of the thin air in my lungs and it continued throughout the day. For reference, I will tell you that the stairs we ran up and down were about 5 stories, and the brick walls that we jumped up were about 5' tall.
Here's the interval workout (which I finished, but thought I was going to throw up on numerous occasions):
Prisoner squats X20
Run up to the top of the stairs and back down
Pushups with star hold X10 on each side
Run up to the top of the stairs and back down
Burpees with block jump X15
Run up to the top of the stairs and back down
Dips X20
Run up to the top of the stairs and back down
Box jumps X20
Wall climbs X8
Rest
Wall climbs X5
And we weren't done after that. After a 2-3 minute rest, we did an ab circuit of:
Bicycle kicks (forward) x20
Bicycle kicks (backward) x20
V-ups x20
Side V-ups X10 each side
V-sit twists x40
Plank with alternating knees to chest x20
AND of course, because I was feeling amazing after the ab workout....I ran ANOTHER set of stairs (half-way down and all the way back up). Just because. :)
Then after we left Red Rocks, we stopped at a trail on the way back to Boulder and hiked for about 30 minutes. The hike helped to ease the lactic acid buildup that I had going on in my legs. Now I feel GREAT and wish that I wasn't leaving tomorrow. :(
Now its time to go celebrate St. Patty's Day in Denver. Luck of the Irish to you all!!! :)
Spring Training in Colorado!
Sure, I was upset that my flight to Denver was delayed 24 hours. But what really made me upset was that I wasted an entire day in the airport on Sunday, when I could have been training in Boulder. Boo for bad weather, but I made it to my destination in one peice so I have to be thankful for that.
I arrived on Sunday night to Denver, and Dan (my bro) picked me up from the airport. We didn't end up getting back to his place in Boulder until 3am (which is 5am EST), and I ended up sleeping in until 1030. After eating a nice healthy breakfast (egg white omellete with mushrooms and green peppers), and waiting 30 minutes, we went to the pool for a swim workout.
I'm not exactly how far I swam. But I did a few drills and jumped around a little for about 40 minutes. Then after we swam (and consumed a protein shake and peanut butter sandwich), we hopped on our bikes and headed into town. We ended up biking about 10 miles total. While in town, we stopped at a really cute sandwich shop for lunch (veggie burger).
Dinner was mexican food, which I ate wayyyyyy too much of, but it was sooooo good. Tacos with salsa and fresh homemade guacamole, and of course 2 Coronas to establish complete authenticity. Then we just relaxed for the rest of the night.
This morning after breakfast (power oatmeal), we headed to the gym for an upper body workout. I worked on chest and back while doing a circuit I found in Oxygen magazine. Then I did one super set of an ab workout (also from Oxygen magazine).
Lunch was a protein shake, peanut butter & jelly sandwich, chips w/guacamole, and some cashews. After lunch we headed to NOAA's Earth System's Research Lab, which was AMAZING and allowed me to learn about my field from a different perspective (Check out: http://sos.noaa.gov/). Then we headed over to Eldiablo Springs for a 4 mile hike -- also AMAZING. The air out here is so clean and fresh, and the sun is so bright. The scenery is also just unreal, and cannot be captured by cameras. There was snow melting on the trail, yet I was wearing a tanktop. I did feel the effects of the altitude for the first hour or so of the hike, but then didn't really notice it after that.
We just finished eating our dinner (pasta & marina sauce with left over turkey from last night's tacos, and sweet potato fries). Now we are just sitting here relazing and digesting. Heading into town in a few minutes so I can get my shopping fix, and check out some of the local microbreweries. Tomorrow we are heading to Denver for a workout at Red Rocks (look for us on the webcam: http://www.redrocksfitness.com/). I'm SUPER pumped, and hope that the altitude doesn't hinder my ability to train hard.
Hope it goes well, and can't wait to write all about it!!!
Tuesday, March 9, 2010
I woke up before 9:00am today! And I didn't have to be into school until 12:30. I'm pretty excited about that, because I had time to take Jack up to the park for a game of fetch, AND for an upper body workout this morning. I was going to bike before my second class today.....BUUTTTTT I had to finish my cheat sheet (it was allowed) for my exam tonight. I didn't do that great on the test anyways, so I should have just forgotten the damn cheat sheet and rode 15 miles or so.
Anyways, when I got home, Heather and I did Yoga Body Burn with Denise Austin (~20 minutes). It was awesome. Now it's time for bed, and hopefully I won't be such a slacker on the cardio tomorrow! Now that my car no longer has a donut on it, I have plans to head up to Salem tomorrow afternoon to see my Otis. Then tomorrow night, I'm heading up to Cambridge to hang with my good friend Nicole. So I will have to workout in the morning if I'm going to at all.
SOOOOO that means I will have to go to sleep in the next 10 minutes if I want to wake up before 9 again! Time for some Terry Goodkind and snuggle time with Jack-O-Lantern! Good night!
Monday, March 8, 2010
Ok. So the Salem trip got delayed due to some car issues (flat tire). And I never ended up going for a run yesterday. I did, however, go for a 3 hour walk with my roommates - the Heathers - and Jack and Heather's dog Kaida. It was SUCH a gorgeous day, so we wanted to spend some time outside. We walked up to Sullivans on Castle Island, and I got a much needed frozen yogurt.
It was another gorgeous day today, and I was all ready with my swim stuff to head to campus for a 45min-1hour swim. That didn't happen. I felt like I needed to make the most of the weather. I ended up running for 40 minutes, and had a little bit of knee pain. It's probably because I didn't have time to warm up and stretch. I'm thinking I need to start taking my glucosamine/chondroitin supplements again to aid with the joint pain. But after the run, I felt AMAZING. I felt so good, and energized, that I walked to JFK/UMASS station instead of taking the train. It turns out that it's only like a 12 minute walk from my house, so I will be doing that more often now that spring in pretty much here! Although I'm sure there will be at least one more snow storm before the first official day of spring.
Tonight is roommate yoga night! WOOHOO!!! :)
Sunday, March 7, 2010
Well I attempted to run on Wednesday, when I finally arrived at the gym at 430pm. I wasn't really feeling it though. I was tired, and I felt like I was going to fall asleep on the treadmill (is that even possible??). Anyways, I ran a mile and then headed back home to take the day off from training.
Thursday, I decided to try again and ended up doing an interval workout on the treadmill for 4.5 miles. I felt great right after, but then a few hours later I was ready to crash!
Friday, I took another day off because I had a volleyball tournament on Saturday. My team ended up winning, which is awesome! Today, I'm going to try and get a quick run in because it is amazingly gorgeous outside. Then I'm heading up to Salem for the afternoon with my roomie!
Sorry that blog sucked. I feel like I've been a little lazy because I burned myself out with starting too fast. I will do better next time. :)
195 more days!
And I'm back!
Ok, so my brother Dan and I just signed up for the 70.3 IronMan in Syracuse on September 19. It turns out to be a perfect time and location for me to race, and gives me plenty of time to train.
I started my training on Monday with a 1000m swim. It wasn't too bad. I stopped to catch my breath after every 100m, but the length of time it took to recover kept getting shorter as my body got warmer and more comfortable with being in the water again. I had to order a new suit though, because the one I used to train with last year had some serious sagging issues going on. For the record, when they say "resistant to chlorine degradation", they are full of crap. Instead of falling for that again and buying an expensive training suit, I decided to buy a $20 one-peice Speedo with some random, ugly design.
Yesterday morning (Tuesday), I did a short upperbody circuit at home (pullups, shoulder presses, upright rows, bicep curls, tricep extensions, bentover rows, AND repeat). Then in the afternoon, I hit the bike at the gym for 45 minutes and then immediately went to the treadmill for a mile run. Definitely had brick legs for the first 5 minutes or so, but once that went away, I felt like I could run for days. I couldn't of course because I had to go to class. :(
Today, however, I had some serious issues getting out of bed. I'm sore, and have no energy. I'm afraid that I might have overdone it in the past 3 days (Sunday was a volleyball tourney). I'm planning on going for a light run today once the rain/snow stops, so we will see how that goes.
I'm also missing a part of my Nike+, which pisses me off because I love knowing how far I've gone and my pace and everything. If I can't find it within the next few days, I may have to splurge and buy a new one. They are only $30, so that's not too bad. Unfortunately, my iPod is not working correctly. I can't sync it with my itunes. Perhaps it's because it's like 7 years old, and is the first version Nano. So I've been running with the same songs, and I'm ready to change my playlist. Maybe I will just get a cheap Shuffle, which is enough to put a few songs on to get me through an hour-long run. We will see...
It is now 2:30pm and I have hardly done anything. So I'm off to campus to get some school work done. Maybe I will just use the treadmill today so I can track my distance, and won't get sick from running in the rain.
It feels good to be back on the training wagon! Now I just have to put a higher focus on my nutrition if I want to have enough energy to train and be productive in school.
Only 199 days (28 weeks) left to train for the biggest race of my life! :)
